Zimbabwe ruling factions grow increasingly hostile

Relations between Zimbabwe's ruling coalition partners seemed to sink to new lows, with Prime Minister Robert Mugabe accusing Home Affairs Minister Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army of disloyalty to the government and provoking a wave of killings in Salisbury's Chitungwiza Township and Ttoko, 90 miles from the capital.

The Sunday Mail newspaper also said Mr. Mugabe threatened to seize white-owned land without compensation, seemingly contradicting Zimbabwe's British-drafted Constitution. He said Britain had reneged on promises to provide funds to compensate white farmers. The government would therefore tell white farmers to surrender some land and look to Britain for compensation, "because we have no money to pay them and do not feel inclined to pay for land plundered from the indigenous people by the colonialists."
