Japan welcomes US vote not to limit car imports

Japan welcomed the US International Trade Commission's vote against imposing limits on car imports, but stressed the need for continued caution on Japanese car exports. Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki said the decision was fair but added that "the Japanese auto industry should not be overjoyed and should maintain cautious marketing." Industry sources said the decision was likely to influence trade talks here this week between Japan and President Carter's outgoing administration. They said, however, the United Auto Workers union might press the US Congress to restrain car imports despite the commission's vote.
