Two major international painting exhibitions will receive their first at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. The first, based on the works of British landscape artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, is entitled "Turner and the Sublimes" and opens Nov. 1. It closes on Jan. 4, to be followed closely by "Vincent van Gogh and the Birth of Cloisonism," from Jan. 24 to marck 22.

Both Turner and van Gogh are painters of unversal appeal. Turner evolved a highly personal art using light as an instruments to excite the imagination, while van Gogh and several French contemporaries carried the understanding and study of light and color even further, blending a variety of Eastern and Western art influences into style called "Cloisonism."

After its Toronto debut, the Turner exhibit will travel to the Yale Center for British Art and then to the British Museum, where it will be the major summer exhibition in 1981.

The van Gogh exhibit will have its only North American showing in Toronto before being on view at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Most of the works in both exhibitions are on an loan from public and private collections in Europe and the United States, and most of them have never traveled before or have never been exhibited together.
