Thousands of Los Angeles municipal employees -- including traffic controllers , mechanics, janitors, trash collectors, and security guards -- struck the city despite a court order prohibiting the walkout. The full scope of the strike could not be determined immediately, but the three unions involved represent about 10,000 blue-collar workers, and early reports indicated most were staying home.
