US District Court Judge Gerhard Gesell ruled in favor of an American Civil Liberties Union challenge to the Selective Service System's requirement that draft registrants give social security numbers. The ACLU contended that such information violated the Privacy Act of 1974, which seeks to prohibit the use of social security numbers as a "universal identifier."
