Ruling Kuomintang wins in voting on Taiwan

The ruling Kuomintang Party won a predictable victory in parliamentary elections here over the weekend. The Central Election Commission said the Kuomintang took 56 to 70 seats at stake in the 361-seat legislative Yuan (parliament), and 63 of the 76 seats contested for the National Assembly. About 68 percent of the nearly 10 million registered voters went to the polls. Among independents elected were two women whose husbands were jailed in connection with antigovernment rioting last December, and the brother of a man also jailed for his alleged role in the disturbances.
