A federal appeals court decided no punitive damages should be awarded in suits stemming from a 1979 crash of a DC-10 jet that killed 273 persons. The court ruled McDonnell Douglas Corp. and American Airlines were not liable for punitive damages under Illinois law. The decision would shield the airline and aircraft firm from millions of dollars in damage judgments, but it still leaves them open to judgments for co mpensatory damages.
