A setback for Devlin

Bernadette Devlin, hit by five bullets in an assassination attempt at her home, was placed under intensive care after a relapse, a hospital spokesman said. The Irish Republican Army, which is fighting for British withdrawal from northern Ireland, has accused extremist Protestants of the assassination attempt. Miss Devlin was prominent in a republican campaign for political status for jailed guerrillas.

British troops arrested three men within minutes of the shooting at Derrylaughan village in county Tyrone. Police said the three were still being questioned and that no charges were likely Sunday.

Miss Devlin, dubbed by newspapers "the Joan of Arch of the Barricades," became, at 21, the youngest member of the British Parliament since the 19th century. She lost the seat in 1974.
