Polish union bends on Saturday work

Poland's independent Solidarity union proposed a compromise with authorities over demands for an immediate 40-hour, five-day working week which could lead to another mass walkout by workers this Saturday. A Solidarity spokesman said regional delegates passed a resolution acknowledging that Poland could not afford the immediate introduction of no-work Saturdays. The union ordered millions of members to boycott their jobs during the first working Saturday of 1981, and has threatened to do so again this Saturday. But the spokesman said the union would compromise if the government accepted in principle free Saturdays.
