Solidarity and its leader compromise on Saturdays

January 22, 1981

solidarity union leader Lech Walesa arrived here for crucial talks with officials on work-free Saturdays. Strikes had been threatened today (Jan. 22), should the talks fail. Mr. Walesa's attendance at the talks came after a stormy session of the Solidarity national commission at which he faced sharp opposition from militant factions. Solidarity's national committee overrode moderates and warned the government that workers who refuse Saturday shifts will avoid reprisals b y calling their action a strike.
