Nkomo guerrillas spark violence in rival area
January 26, 1981
Salisbury, Zimbabwe
Guerrillas loyal to minority leader Joshua Nkomo were reported to have launched a reign of terror in Salisbury's restive Chitungwiza township, where thousands of rival bush fighters are quartered. Members of Mr. Nkomo's Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) were moved into townships last year to train them to as soldiers of the new national Army. But attempts to fuse ZIPRA and the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe into a single force have been hindered by strained relations between Mr . Mugabe and Mr. Nkomo.
