Lusaka, Zambia
Mine union leaders held meetings throughout Zambia's vital copper region to urge wildcat strikers to go back to work. The strikes, which brought copper and cobalt production to a halt last Thursday and Friday, began when Zambia's only legal party expelled 17 trade union leaders from the party for opposing a new system of local government. Party leaders felt the unionists were meddling too much in politics and nee ded disciplining.
