Algerians may be asked to mediate in Gulf war

January 27, 1981

Algeria, fresh from successful mediation in the hostage crisis, may be asked to play a similar role in the war between Iran and Iraq, Islamic conference sources here said. It was through Algerian mediation efforts that the late Shah of Iran and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein resolved the longstanding border dispute between their two countries in 1975 with a treaty signed in Algiers. Shortly before the war started Sept. 22, Iraqi tore up the treaty. Iran has refused to at tend the summit.
