Krugerrand again top seller

February 2, 1981

The Krugerrand was the world's leading gold bullion investment unit in 1980 for the 10th straight year. International Gold Corporation (Intergold), the marketing organization for the mining industry of South Africa, sold 3.1 million ounces of Krugerrands worldwide, producing close to $2 billion in revenue. The revenue produced was the highest since Krugerrand marketing began on a worldwide basis in the fall of 1970 and far surpassed its leading competitors, the Mexican peso and the Canadian Maple Leaf.

"These figures," Mike Vigil, general manager of Intergold's Coin Division, points out, "include the half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce coins for the first time. We introduced the new coins at the end of September and they will not really have significant f ull-year impact until the 1981 figures begin emerging."
