State department officials confirmed that Robert E. White was fired as US ambassador to El Salvador for publicly criticizing US actions, but said that does not signal a policy change toward Central America. He is the first carrer ambassador to be removed by the Reagan administration. The officials linked Mr. White's dismissal directly to several interviews he gave to US newspapers and said the problem that led to his dismissal was not a policy disagreement.
