Alexandria, Virginia honors its most famous citizen throughout the month of February during the city's annual celebration of George Washington's birthday. A tour of 18th and 19th century homes kicks off the celebration on February 7 followed a week later with the traditional George Washington Birthnight Ball on February 14 and a Revolutional War Encampment of February 15. Capping the festivities is the nation's largest parade commemorating Washington's birthday. The ball will take place in the Ballroom at Gadsby's Tavern, where it was held in 1799 when George and Martha Washington attended as guests of honor. On the official holiday, the 16th, full dress colonial regiments, military bands, fife and drum corps, floats, high school marching bands, drill teams, antique cars, and clowns will parade through the historic streets of Alexandria in tribute to George Washington.
