The left-leaning government of that troubled Central American country has commissioned a confidential survey to determine how much US business and political leaders know -- and what they think -- about it.

This sensitivity to American opinion is viewed as a positive sign by some US officials. But they say they are getting mixed signals from the Nicaraguans. Secretary of State Alexander Haig is convinced that Nicaragua is a conduit for Cuban-supplied weapons to insurgents in El Salvador.

An official determination that this is the case would require an end to US economic aid to Nicarag ua.m
