Kremlin divulges a letter to US
Washington
Firing another shot in the war of words between Washington and Moscow, the Soviet Embassy has published a letter from the Kremlin's foreign minister, Andrei Gromyko, to US Secretary of State Alexander Haig. The Jan. 28 letter mentioned the Polish labor unrest, the Afghanistan situation, and the former Iranian hostage crisis. It was released to reporters by the Soviet Embassy here in a highly unusual move.
Some US officials said they saw it as an attempt by the Kremlin to gain an advantage in the tough exchanges between Moscow and the Reagan administration. The letter attacked what it called attempts by the United States and Western powers to influence affairs in Poland, especially through the Voice of America and other radio stations under US control.
The State Department rejected the charge regarding the Voice of America broadcasts but declined comment on other aspects of the letter.
