Kurdish insurgents, fighting a little-noted but intensive "second war" against the Iranian government, have been driven out of their stronghold of Mahabad by more than two weeks of heavy artillery bombardment, Kurdish dissident sources said. They said the rebels withdrew from their last positions over the weekend to prevent further bloodshed and damage to civilian property in the city , in the extreme northwest of Iran.
