Polish students win Warsaw concessions

Polish student leaders Wednesday called for an end to strikes and other campus protests after the government signed a new "freedom charter" for colleges and universities and legalized an independent students union.
A student spokeswoman said the agreement, which a government newspaper said contained far-reaching concessions to students, was signed at the University of Lodz by Higher Education Minister Janusz gorski. She added that the Lodz students, who had occupied faculty buildings for almost a month, were returning to their classes. Lodz strike leaders were appealing to students in other schools across the country to call off sympathy strikes.
Meanwhile, Tass, the official Soviet news agency, accused the Polish dissident group KOR and part of the leadership of Solidarity of inciting strikes at educational institutes t o maintain tension in the country.
