Radical leftists voted out in Kuwait's new Assembly

Kuwait's new national Assembly contains Islamic fundamentalists and young technocrats but none of the radical leftists who led the opposition to the government in past assemblies, election results show.

Political sources said the defeat of the radicals in Monday's election, which restored parliamentary democracy after a four-year break, was likely to please both the Kuwaiti government and other Gulf states, which are more hesitant about allowing a greater political freedom.

In addition, the previous Cabinet, led by Sheikh Saad al-Abdulla al-Sabah, resigned Tuesday and a new one will be c hosen before the Assembly's first session on March 9.
