Direct rule imposed on India's Manipur state

Direct central government rule was imposed on the northeast Indian state of Manipur where rebel groups are demanding independence. New Delhi announced the move a day after the state's chief minister, Rishang Keishing, resigned rather than be defeated in a no-confidence motion in the state assembly. His 93 -day-old government was reduced to a minority earl ier this week when 10 members of his party defected.
