Argentine in US to warm up ties

Argentine President-elect Roberto Viola arrived here Monday for a two-day visit which will include a meeting with President Reagan, during which the two leaders are expected to mend strained relations. General Viola, who takes over from President Jorge Videla March 29 will hold talks with Secretary of State Alexander Haig and meet President Reagan at the White House today (March 17.)

US officials said the discussions were likely to focus on opening a new era of friendship between the two countries. Relations dropped to a record low point under the Carter administration, which took a hard line on human rights in Argentina and eventually cut off all military aid to its government. General Viola is expected to ask Mr. Reagan to lift the three-year-old ban on military sales to Argentina
