Detente isn't either dead, Haig tells West Germany

The United States, acting swiftly to avert potential concern among its allies , assured West Germany that statements by a senior Reagan aide who said detente was dead did no represent official policy. The West German Foreign Ministry said Secretary of State Alexander Haig made the disavowal in a letter that reached Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher just before he left Bonn on an official visit to Warsaw. Mr. Haig made clear that the views expressed by the administration aide did not reflect his own or those of the US government, the Foreign Ministry said.
