Walesa wins pledge for no Polish strike

Lech Walesa, the independent labor movement leader, won a no-strike pledge Monday by threatening to resign, and Deputy Prime Minister Mieczslaw Rakowski warned the union it was risking Soviet intervention, Solidarity sources said.

Solidarity union chapters around the country heeded an urgent appeal by the union leadership not to strike or carry out protests, at least pending a "life or death" emergency meeting later Monday of the union's national coordinating commission.

Meanwhile, Solidarity leaders met in emergency session in Bydgoszcz Monday to decide how to respond to a clash between police and union activists in the city last Thursday.
