Western nations promise rural aid for Zimbabwe

The United States, Britain, and other Western nations pledged tens of millions of dollars in additional aid to finance rural reorganization in Zimbabwe. They made the promises on the second day of a conference aimed at raising some $2 billion for the former British colony.

The head of the US delegation said US aid would be increased by $75 million for the 1982 fiscal year. This would bring US assistance for the three-year period to $225 million. The head of Britain's delegation said that British aid for the 1980-83 period would be increased by $55 million, creating a total of almost $30 7 million.
