A headline in yesterday's Arts/Entertainment page read: 'Can 40 years of letters make witty drama? Yes -- Our illiteracy editor argued that Shaw wouldn't have minded since he spent years (and much of the money he left in his will) trying to reform the spelling of the English language. No sale. Shaw would have spelled it '. . . if thare Shaw's.'

So to Wilfred Funk, John Ciardi, Bill Safire, and the fifth-grade spelling bee, apologies. Their they're won't be our their ever again, by pshaw.
