April 16, 1981

US envoy Chester A. Crocker described as "good" his talks Wednesday with South African ministers on an independence settlement in Namibia (South-West Africa) and other regional issues. Mr. Crocker, the designee for US assistant secretary of state for African affairs, met South Africa's foreign minister, Roelof Botha, and the defense minister, Gen. Magnus Malan, officials said. The three-hour session was seen in South Africa as marking a critical stage in Mr. Crocker's tour of the continent. No meeting was fixed between Mr. Crocke r and Prime Minister Pieter W. Botha.
