TV has become one of the latest weapons in the wars for Middle East "hearts and minds." Syria is using a new transmitter to reach the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, much of Galilee, and even Amman, Jordan. With bait such as the highly rated "Dallas" series, the Syrian station beams news that frequently condemns Jordan's King Hussein.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli-backed militiamen, with help of American fundamentalists, launch a TV station this month that will beam its signals into the heavily Palestinian Tyre and Sidon region.
In east Beirut, Falangists also are readying a channel -- but an opposing group in west Beirut is planning to jam the Falange signal with a broadcast of its own.
