FOOTBALL; Hornung and the Hall of Fame

When you think of Vince Lombardi's legendary Green Bay Packers, winners of five pro football titles, many players come to mind. One of them is Paul Hornung, the Golden Boy halfback with a nose for the goal line and a superb knack for following his blockers.

Surprisingly, he has yet to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame, although eligible for selection for a decade. This fact made him the focus in Sports Illustrated's fascinating discovery that not a single Heisman Trophy winner has ever been inducted into the Canton, Ohio, shrine. Other recipients of the college game's top individual award who enjoyed distinguished pro careers, but haven't made the Hall, are Alan Ameche, Leon Hart, Billy Cannon, and Mike Garrett.

Hornung feels his suspension during the 1963 season, the result of gambling on games, and the existence of so many other outstanding Packers when he played have hinder ed his Hall of Fame chances.
