Zazatinhani, a Deserted Caravanserai on the Road to Konya, Turkey

April 22, 1981

At night there was no sound no camel bells no mice no insect noises. The frost came quietly and we were safe inside where caravans had rested. At dawn the mist enveloped us a rainbow in the west the mountains hidden. Geese flew up in pairs then flocks, then more and more and little larks leading us on and on into the plain. We thought the day was ours and ours alone, but at the well a herd of cattle came, a young man rode up and watched us silently while we doggedly drew water. He let his donkey go and tipped the balanced well-sweep drawing bucket after bucket splashing the car and laughing with us as we polished. our car dusty in yesterday's road shone wet and bright.
