Marcos sets June 16 for presidential vote

April 22, 1981

President Ferdinand Marcos has signed a bill setting June 16 as the date of the Philippines' first presidential election since 1969, the government radio announced. The radio said Mr. Marcos signed the bill late Monday after the interim National Assembly approved it. Marcos extended the campaign period to 52 days from the originally proposed 42 days. The United Democratic Opposition, the main rival political group to the ruling New Society Movement Party, has pressed for lengthening the campaign period to 120 days.
