Southerland cited for 'Spy Wars' series
Monitor State Department correspondent Daniel Southerland has received a citation for excellence from the Overseas Press Club of America for his 1980 series on "Spy Wars."
His six-part series investigated international espionage and intrigue. Mr. Southerland gathered his information in Washington, New York, Paris, Bonn, Berlin, Munich, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem.
The main award in Mr. Southerland's category -- the Bob Considine Award for the best daily newspaper or wire service interpretation from abroad -- went to Guy Gugliotta of the Miami Herald for news analysis on Central and South America and Iran.
Others presented awards April 29 by the Overseas Press Club include:
Richard Ben Cramer, Philadelphia Inquirer, for "Afghan Rebellion"; Joseph Kraft, New Yorker magazine, for "Letter from OPEC"; Time magazine, for "Inside the USSR"; and Paul Conrad of the Los Angeles Times for hi s cartoon "Hari-Cari."
