2 On Thurmond list bow from court consideration
Washington
Attorney General William French Smith and Edwin Meese III, President Reagan's top aide, have taken themselves out of the running for appointments to the Supreme Court.
Both were among eight candidates suggested by Sen. Strom Thurmond (R) of South Carolina, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, as possible replacements for retiring Justice Potter Stewart.
Women on the list are US Court of Appeals Judge Cornelia Kennedy in Detroit, US Court of Appeals Judge Amalya Kearse in New York, and Elizabeth Hanford Dole, an assistant to the President and wife of Sen. Bob Dole (R) of Kansas.
US Court of Appeals Judge J. Clifford Wallace, a San Diego-based jurist and native California, is believed to be one of Mr. Reagan's favorites. Also included are Charles E. Simmons Jr., chief judge of the US District Court in Columbia, S.C., and C. Bruce Littlejohn, associate justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina.
