Pact for Sinai peace force completed by 3 nations

June 26, 1981

US, Israeli, and Egyptian negotiators completed drafting an agreement establishing a multinational peace force to police the Sinai border between Egypt and Israel. The draft, which wound up a two-day conference, will be submitted to the three governments for approval.

Egyptian officials earlier said the force will consist of 2,000 to 2,500 men, including a US battalion on the Egyptian side of the border, plus about 100 observers on the Israeli side. This will be the first time the US has participated with troops in a Middle East peacekeeping operation.
