Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors advanced to their expected semifinal meeting in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, but with sharply contrasting performances. While Borg, the defending champion and top seed, reeled off his 40th successive Wimbledon singles win -- he last lost here in 1975 -- by overwhelming 12th- seeded Australian Peter McNamara, 7- 6, 6-2, 6-3, Connors, the third seed, needed 3 1/2 hours to win his quarterfinal against Vijay Amritraj, the unseeded Indian, 2-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
In the other quarterfinal matches, No. 2 seed John McEnroe defeated Johan Kriek, 6-1, 7-5, 6-1. Rod Frawley defeated Tim Mayotte, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.
