Bolshoi ballerina seeks asylum, US confirms

A State Department spokesman confirmed that a ballerina of the Soviet Bolshoi Ballet slipped away from the touring company in Istanbul and sought to come to the United States as a political refugee. The spokesman said he presumed she would be considered for political refugee status. Turkish radio identified the dancer as Galina Churshina. Police said sh e had taken refuge in the US Consulate.
