Pope names an associate to be primate of Poland

Pope John Paul named a close associate, Bishop Josef Glemp of Warmia, as archbishop of Warsaw and primate of Poland, a Vatican spokesman said. Bishop Glemp, certain to be made a cardinal at the next consistory, succeeds Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, who served as primate of Poland for 33 years and led the Roman Catholic Church into a position as the strongest power in the country other than the Communist Party. The new primate worked closely with Cardinal Wyszynski and steps into his mentor's shoes intent on continuing the church's policy of support for the Solidarity union coupled with restr aint.
