Wave of food protests breaks out in Poland

Poland was hit by a surge of new food protests, with angry workers declaring strikes, organizing rallies, and demanding meetings with authorities. Regional leaders of the Solidarity union movement worked furiously to stem a mounting tide of anger at food shortages, reduced meat rations, and proposed price increases.

Two wildcat strikes broke out in Warsaw. Some 2,000 textile workers in one mill struck for three hours, and bus drivers at one depot refused to take their vehicles out for several hours. Warning strikes were called in the cities of Czestochowa, Piotrkow Trybunalski, and Grudziadz, and protest meetings and hunger marches were announce d in other cities.
