Angola says part of it invaded by S. Africans

July 31, 1981

Angola said South African forces based in nearby Namibia invaded the southern part of the country and occupied seven towns. South Africa denied launching any large-scale offensive in Angola but said "hot-pursuit operations" were constantly being carried out in the former Portuguese colony against guerrillas from Namibia (South-West Africa), which is ruled by South Africa in defiance of the United Nations.

The Angolan news agency ANGOP quoted a Defense Ministry communique saying the South African forces had established positions up to 60 miles inside Angola earlier this month. Angolan officials in Lisbon said that the South African forces were still inside Angola but that the Angolan Army was avoiding pitc hed battles with the invaders.
