France plans food airlift to help the hungry Poles

France will deliver large quantities of grain, beef, and sugar to Poland to help it meet a food shortage, Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy announced. After a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Francois Mitterrand, preparations were begun to start an airlift between Paris and Warsaw. About 300 ,000 metric tons of grain, 7,000 tons of beef, and 15,000 tons of sugar will be delivered on credit, Mr. Mauroy reported. France will also urgently approach its Western allies to agree on a loan of $500 million to Poland, he said. The Cabinet decisions followed a meeting between Mr. Mauroy and Polish Ambassador Eugeniusz Kulaga, who asked France for food aid.
