Haitian refugees moved peaceably to Puerto Rico

A group of 125 Haitian boat people arrived in Puerto Rico from Florida, the first of up to 800 immigrants scheduled to be flown out of an overcrowded camp near Miami.

Under terms of an agreement between federal immigration officials and Puerto Rico, the Haitians will stay at Fort Allen, an abandoned Navy base, no longer than one year. There were no protests at the airport or the fort, despite a flurry of opposition to the transfer by Puerto Ricans as well as Haitian exile groups who believe the move is the first step in deporting the refugees back to Haiti.
