British Rail, citing loss, asks unions not to strike

Britain's state-owned rail network lost $74 million in the first half of 1981 , its chief executive announced, as he appealed to unions to call off a threatened national strike.

British Rail said it could not afford the full 11 percent pay increase awarded three unions by an arbitration tribunal.
