All-around schools

August 20, 1981

Mention UCLA and basketball comes to mind; Southern Cal and the sport is football. Word associations may indicate the athletic strengths of these schools, but they don't tell the whole story. During the past 11 years, one or the other has been acclaimed No. 1 in the Knoxville Journal's annual All-Sports Ranking.

UCLA earned the title this year, with Soughern Cal finishing a disappointing 10th. Sandwiched between were (in order): Arizona State, Indiana, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Michigan, Southern Methodist, and Brigham Young.

The ratings are based on men's results from NCAA competition in 10 sports: cross-country, football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swimming, track and field, tennis, golf, and baseball. Point values, from 1 to 20, are assigned for the order of finish in national championships or polls
