The Soviets are expected to make big hay out of the return of the Polovchaks to the USSR -- minus their 13-year-old son. Young Walter remains in Chicago after receiving the political asylum he sought from the US. A custody battle surrounding him is expected to remain in litigation -- possibly until Walter reaches adulthood.
Says one veteran analyst of U.S.-Soviet relations, Moscow -- which views the case as "kidnapping" -- will exploit the case "to the hilt" when Washington next points a finger at it for human rights violations.m
