Solidarity accuses Warsaw of strike-blocking tactics

Solidarity accused the government of training new technicians and placing police and soldiers on guard outside state radio and television studios to head off a possible nationwide broadcast strike.

The moves came just hours after government-union talks on access to the media broke down because Solidarity, which has hundreds of members employed in the state broadcast industry, refused to lift the threat of a nationwide broadcast strike.

Stanislaw Loranc, chairman of the state radio and television commission, denied that the soldiers and police were brought in at his request.
