British Labour Party kills a call for leaving NATO
October 1, 1981
Brighton, England
Britain's opposition Labour Party rejected a call for the next Labour government to withdraw the country from the Nato alliance but hardened its demands for unilateral nuclear disarmament.
A resolution at the party's annual conference which would have committed the next Labour government to immediate and unilateral withdrawal from all connections with NATO was overwhelminingly defeated by delegates. Member of Parliement Joan Lestor, speaking for the party's executive opposition to the proposal, said Britain could remain a member of the alliance and work for disarmament from within.
