Sadat claims Libya plans to stage Sudan invasion

Egyptian President Sadat accused Col. Muammar Qaddafi, the Libyan leader, of planning to invade the Sudan as part of a Soviet scheme to control the oil-rich Middle East. Libya's Soviet ties are a "danger that should not be minimized," Mr. Sadat told Mayo, the weekly official publication of his National Democratic Party.

Sadat's defense minister, Gen. Halim Abu Ghazala, warned in an interview with the magazine Rose el-Y oussef that 36,500 communist troops in Libya and Ethiopia could be used as a Soviet rapid-deployment force in the Persian Gulf, the horn of Africa, or North Africa.

"All indications point to a Soviet plan that aims at destroying the forces that oppose Soviet control of the region," he said.
