US accords Wallenberg citizenship for heroism

Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat credited with saving 100,000 Jews during World War II, is an honorary United States citizen amid "evidence" the is still alive as a Russian prisoner. President Reagan signed legislation making Mr. Wallenberg only the second foreigner ever granted honorary citizenship. Sir Winston churchill was the first -- given the honor in 1963.

Mr. Reagan disclosed in his signing ceremony that there is "evidence he [ Wallenberg] is still a prisoner" in the Soviet Union. The State Department has been unable to confirm reports that he lives in a Soviet prison camp 35 years after he was seized by the Russians in violation of diplomatic immunity and international law.
