Canada wants US to join immediate acid rain drive

Canadian officials want to launch an immediate attack on acid rain, but the Environmental Protection Agency says the problem needs more study. A Canadian delegation argued before a House subcommittee that the problem will only get worse if action is delayed. They called for a joint US-Canadian program -- similar to the successful effort to clean up the Great Lakes. Acid rain, linked to emissions from US coal-burning power plants and factories, has been blamed for killing fish and vegetation.
The EPA appeared to take just the position feared by the Canadians, saying that the cause of acid rain and feasibility of controls are the subject of debate and that the problem is now the subject of a 10-year study
